For as long as there has been organized society, the death penalty has existed in numerous cultures and civilizations. Throughout the years the methods have changed, but the use of capital punishment is becoming a pressing matter. Amnesty International reports that there are 140 countries worldwide that have abolished the death penalty, while over 50 countries still practice it. Over the past few decades, there has been a sharp drop in countries carrying out capital punishment. In 2014 there were 22 countries with recorded executions, a sharp drop compared to the 1995 figure of 45 countries that carried out executions. The countries which have abolished the death penalty claim that is inhuman and cruel and unusual punishment. They believe that it violates the human right to life. The states which have not abolished the death penalty believe that it provides closure to the families of victims who have lost a loved one they will never replace. Debate still rages throughout the world on how to properly deal with this issue. Use of capital punishment today is regional, with the majority of Europe having abolished it. In contrast, much of the Middle East practices the death penalty. In addition, parts of the U.S still use capital punishment.
